A Stroll through the History of Baltimore, Maryland
There are many reasons why the history of the city of Baltimore deserves our attention. To begin with, Baltimore has played a crucial role in the economy of our nation for several centuries already; furthermore, Baltimore has been the site of many riveting episodes in our nation’s history, from fending off invaders to drafting our gorgeous and memorable National Anthem (in fact, both at the same time!). So join us in celebrating the history and culture of this unique urban space, “Charm City” as it is known to the locals, and discover Baltimore’s exciting historical legacy below.Though the Port of Baltimore had already been created by the middle of the first decade of the 18th century (specifically with the purpose of helping control the tobacco trade between the colonies and England), the Town of Baltimore did not appear until a few decades later in 1729. Over the following decades, however, it was the Caribbean sugar cane trade that served up a nice period of boon for the city which served as an important storage point for shipping product back to the Old World.By the end of that century Baltimore found itself at the epicenter of the American Revolutionary movement, and effectively served as the default capital of the incipient nation between December of 1776 and February of 1777 due to the fact that Congress held successive sessions in the city’s Henry Fite House. A little later on, Baltimore once again rose up to champion the cause of our young nation when, in 1812, US forces in the port beat back invading British forces who had just consummated the burning of Washington, D.C. Had it not been for the heroic battle at Baltimore, the course of the War of 1812 could have bxpand even further.
